The film details the true story of how former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard quit his DHS job and risked his life to journey into the jungles of Colombia in an effort to save children from sex slavery.
On Tuesday, Sound of Freedom grossed around $5.5 million to inch closer to the $100 million milestone, according to box office reports, which have yet to tally Wednesday’s earnings.
Sound of Freedom continues to beat Sony Pictures’s Insidious: The Red Door overall, in addition to besting Disney’s latest Indiana Jones film on a daily basis for more than a week.
The film features Jim Caviezel from The Passion of the Christ, Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino from Mighty Aphrodite, and Bill Camp from 12 Years a Slave. The film was produced by Eduardo Verástegui and was written and directed by Alejandro Monteverde.
The Passion of the Christ, which was released in 2004 as an independent film, is the current leader among top-grossing independent films, with earnings of $602 million. With an adjustment for recent inflation, those earnings would reportedly top $900 million.
The film was screened by former President Donald Trump at his golf course in New Jersey on Wednesday night. He praised the film as being an “inspiration.”
“It’s something that I’m not sure you’re supposed to enjoy or learn. It’s a combination. That was a great movie. And now I understand why it is doing so well,” Trump said. “It’s an incredible inspiration.”
