A terminally ill mother has been granted her dying wish of seeing her son graduate after his high school brought an emotional early diploma ceremony to her hospital bedside.
Stephanie Northcott was recently admitted to hospital in Memphis, Tennessee when her health started to fail as a result of her terminal cancer diagnosis.
Her son Dalton Jackson’s graduation from Halls High School in Knoxville is scheduled for May 18 but they both feared she wouldn’t make it to his official ceremony.
Some of Dalton’s friends also dressed in their graduation robes and his football teammates donned their jerseys for the emotional ceremony.
Footage of the ceremony showed Stephanie being wheeled into the hospital’s chapel before her son, and the rest of his classmates, walked in to the sound of traditional graduation music.
The mother sobbed for the duration of the ceremony as Dalton’s principal Suzanne Keefe presented him with his diploma.
‘As you can see, this is a very special class, and this is a very special young man,” Keefe said tearfully before embracing Dalton tightly.
Stephanie has been battling Lynch syndrome, a form of cancer, since 2014. She underwent the last round of chemotherapy she was allowed to have at the end of last year.
The type of cancer she has also tragically claimed the life of her daughter Amber back in 2012.
Stephanie’s family have set up a fund in her name to help cover funeral expenses. Donations can be made by clicking on this PayPal link.
